The Surgical Planning Laboratory has active research in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our work is concentrated in Urogynecology and pelvic floor dysfunction. However, we are exploring research in areas of gynecologic tumor modeling and abnormal placentation in obstetrics. Current research includes:

1) Urogynecology

Although many studies have been performed to unravel the mechanisms underlying the genesis of pelprolapse and genuine stress incontinence due to hypermobility (GSI), the role of the levators remains poorly understood. Nontheless, the levators remain the focus of many non-surgical therapies for the treatment of this condition, but with varying degrees of success .

In order to better understand the specific anatomic defects which may be at issue here, we are evaluating the morphology and volume of pelvic floor support muscles, and the bladder neck, using three dimensional MR based models in living women, with and without pelvic organ dysfunction. We present here a brief tutorial to demonstrate normal and symptomatic female pelvic anatomy.

2) Gyn Oncology

MR-based three dimensional modeling of gynecologic tumors to aid surgical planning.

3) Obstetrics

In utero presurgical planning for fetal anomalies.

4) Surgical planning

MR based evaluation of Mullerian anomalies.
Evaluation of intrauterine anomalies for surgical plannning.
