James Ellsmere M.D. (July 2001-June 2003)

Jim is a CIMIT research fellow. He is working in the SPL under the supervision of Dr. Kikinis.

In 1995, he received his BEng(Elec) from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. He then went on the study medicine at Dalhousie University, graduating with a BSc(Med) and a MD. Before joining the SPL, he completed two years of surgical training at Dalhousie.

He is currently working on an initiative to register laparoscopic ultrasound data with preoperative 3D imaging and display this data to the operating surgeon in real time. This enhanced perspective will hopefully enable surgeons to operate on structures that they could not fully appreciate with laparoscopy alone. The long-term goal of this research is to expand the range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that may be safely performed by minimally invasive abdominal surgeons.
