Surgical Planning Laboratory

Huy Nguyen (March-June 2005)

Huy is a Biomedical Engineering student from the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in the Netherlands and he is currently in the Master phase of his study programm. He earlier graduated Bachelor of Science with a major in Biomedical Engineering at the same university.

As part of his Master program he does a research project at the SPL under the supervision of Michael Halle. The title of the project is "Projected implicit functions for region of interest definition". Huy well develop a new volume-of-interest tool that uses projections of data and implicit functions to define a volume. Instead of considering the volume on a slice-by-slice basis, a volume will be projected onto a plane, as if seen from different viewpoints. The 3D "projected implicit function" shape description will be implemented in either the VTK or ITK open source toolkits, and providing a user interface of Brigham and Women's hospital's 3D Slicer that allows this shape description to be used to specify regions of interest. He will return to the Netherlands in about four months.

His hobbies are play and watch soccer (indoor and outdoor), squash and all kind of other sports.
